What about our first true main battle tank...

The M48 Patton is an American first generation main battle tank introduced in February 1951. It was designed as a replacement for the M26 Pershing, M4 Sherman variants and M46 Pattons used in the Korean War, and as the successor to the M47 Patton. Wikipedia
I will have to read the article but the first main battle tank would have to be whatever the British first put out in 1916.

Actually the Patton M-47 should go on the best post WW2 tanks. Maybe one of the Mods @rittmeister can put the last few posts where they belong.

firstly it's not that far off topic - everything talked about right now was conceived in ww II
secondly i hate splitting threads - especially for nothing

I don't know about all that. From 1942 to 1945 the Sherman was the main battle tank of the US Army as only 20 Pershings's were used in WWII.
A Grant or Lee tank had no chance against a Panzer MkIV. The US Post WWII still used light tanks
Main Battle Tank is just a bureaucratic term.

Tass in their series Russia Beyond makes the argument the ISII tank was the best tank of WWII . It could supposedly withstand a bit from the 88mm gun if it fired over 800 meters away and it had a powerful 122mm gun that could take out a Tiger or Panther at one km away.

main (or mean) battle tank is not a question of numbers it is a question of definition

it was total crap, like

The Leopold II is the best family car since it protects the whole family in a crash situation.

definately not an mbt
an exploding device to kill the own crew, at least if You are stupid enough to cross an electrified railway with free antennas and life ammo
(close to the German-German border near Coburg they always had)
