One of the problems with arming the militia properly was that arms and men kept being moved out of Louisiana into other parts of the CS, and I believe the governor of Florida had made the problem worse by intercepting a musket purchase bound for Louisiana. So all the best muskets had been sent out of state when the attack came in 1862.

I agree. And they were under equipped from the beginning.

Southern Unionist troops really existed with plenty of documented sources unlike the mythical legions of black Confederate soldiers.
