Emmett Till, as I'm sure, everyone knows, was a fourteen year old boy who was lynched in a particularly brutal way in the 1950s. This atrocity was a spark of the Civil Rights Movement. There has been a plaque here where his body was recovered for several years.

Although many people are vehement about the real or imagined threats to Confederate statues, little has been said about the racists who have been making the pilgrimage to Till's plaque to shoot holes in it for years. Its been replaced repeatedly. Recently a quartet of fraternity brothers from ole Miss posed proudly next to the bullet pocked monument still clutching their guns. Now a new monument, advertised as bulletproof has been unveiled, since people aren't getting any smarter.

In the spirit of "racism: it makes you stupider" youtube has a video of a small group of people waving confederate flags in front of the monument and whinging about poor neglected white people. The punch line is an alarm goes off and they bolt for their cars. The footage was caught by security cameras.

Remember " Heritage not hate" and the Confederate Army had tens of thousands of black Confederate soldiers integrated in their ranks. Also white Confederate soldiers took their black comrades home with them on furlough to meet their sisters.
After all if we can believe the above we can believe the ACW had nothing to do with slavery.

Apparently they were members of the "League of the South," according to Patrick Weems, the director of the Emmett Till Memorial Association.

Interestingly enough the Sheriff did arrest the perpetrators and told called them sons of bitches and he would shoot them if they resisted arrest. The County DA did prosecute the murders. If course the jury aquited them.

I'd like to know your source for this. Local law enforcement was seldom the hero in the civil rights movement and Till's lynching was no exception. Sheriff Clarence Strider hid potentially damaging witnesses in jail in another county and used to greet black observers with the n-word. He identified the body as Till's, then claimed it wasn't, but another body planted by the NAACP. He quickly backtracked from that foolishness, but the proceedings, where the jury members swilled beer and spectators toted guns into the courtroom, did him no credit, either.

Moses Wright, who identified the killers in open court, despite the obvious danger to himself, and Till's mother Mamie Bradley Till, who made the painful, but influential decision to have an open casket, revealing her son's mutilated corpse, are the ones who showed courage.

Point well taken .I did read that initially Sheriff Strider did take the murder's into custody but apparently he then had a change of heart. It is certainly not standard procedure to bury a homicide victims body with out an autopsy and to testify for the defense.
