Harriet is an interesting film about African American history. It's not a drama of sacrifice like Glory, or foreshadows tragedy like Selma, or like Twelve Years a Slave where Northrup's escape still leaves his companions in bondage. Its not a comic book shoot em up, like Djano Unchained.

Harriet is about a real human person who escapes an intolerable situation, and then returns to free others. She is successful again and again, smarter, cooler, and more resourceful than her increasingly furious pursuers. There is a brief epilogue of her leading a raid in the Civil War. Brains, guts and faith are rewarded.

Harriet doesn't really have any "superpowers" She has visions that seem to warn her of danger, but its works like intuition: her brain processes all the information at lightning speed. She has the knack of disappearing. She's easy to overlook in a crowd, the middle aged lady in a church congregation, the dapper gentleman on a stroll, sailor, humble freedwoman eager to cooperate with the authorities. She has the gift of quiet movement and speech.
