I was just reading something about the actor Claude Rains(best known as Vichy police captain Renault, "I'm just a poor corrupt official"). Apparently he won kudos playing U.S. Grant in the play Ulysses S Grant, by John Drinkwater, performed in the 1920s. Does anyone know anything about this?

Hmmm....I looked online. He did write a play about Lincoln, where Grant appears as a character.

According to Wikipedia, there was a Grant play, a sequel to Abraham Lincoln
