Ted Cruz actually condemned the above Proclamation and Cruz of course represents a former Confederate State. Interesting political dynamics.

Republicans today are trying to lure the black vote by linking Democrats with slavery and the original KKK. While it is true that Democrats in the 1860s supported both slavery and the KKK, at least Democrats in the South, it's poor historical thinking because it ignores change over time. The strategy is doomed to fail because blacks see actions today. Cruz's condemnation specified Forrest was a Democrat but ignored the governor's membership in the Republican party. The condemnation ignored voter suppression actions by Republicans today in black communities. If Republicans want to woo the black vote, they need to make actions fit words. It's the Party of Lincoln today that is defending the display of the confederate flag and defending all confederate monuments, while it's the Party of Forrest today that is attacking both the display of the confederate flag and confederate monuments. Republicans who want the black vote need to respond to the concerns of black voters in substantive ways, not with rhetoric about what Democrats used to believe and don't believe anymore.

The party of linDemocrats used to believe and don't believe anymore.h f
The Party of Lincoln died by 1964 when Barry Goldwater came out against Civil Rights legislation. The Parties of Trump could absolutely care less about the importance of the black vote. Trump will most likely use racial politics to win the same states he did in 2016 maybe pick up Mn. The future for the Republicans looks grim in the long term if they are just the stay as the white folks party. However it's a good enough strategy to win in 2020

You mean like, humility, fair play, & common sense..?  While there are still Dems who are not radicals, the party is moving that direction.  The hypocrisy, & obvious pandering is hilarious to anyone paying attention.

It was the Dems who had a senator THIS century, who was a former KKK member.  A Grand Poo Ba even.  It was he, in a tv interview who decried, "White N-words".  It was he who filibustered against civil rights legislation.  It was he, who said, he wouldn't serve in the military next to a Black man.

There's a whole lot of buildings, & such named after this man.  When do the names get changed..?  Or is this another case of selective outrage..?

While I believe, people can change their views, I also believe in Byrd's case, it was out of political need, & served him well.  My point is, he was alive this century.  His actions, & words, were in play in most of our lifetimes.  None of us were alive when NBF was.

When our President today calls for stricter control over our borders, & who legally enters our country, many Dems lose their minds.  How quickly they forget, or ignore similar words/actions by Dem superstars like Obama, & Clinton.  Again, selective outrage.

The Dems are going to be real sorry next year, if somebody in charge doesn't tone down the rhetoric, & start exerting some common sense again.  While some of their mainstream policies have good intentions, their demonization of dissent, & silence on the violent movements (antifa), wont pay the dividends they hope.  You can't call people racists because they disagree with you.  This overplayed tactic is losing it's bite.  Screaming in the streets, shutting down opposing views, & demonizing folks based on the color of their skin, isn't the way to win favor with the masses.  The silent majority is awakening, & will reject this approach.  Hard working folks in this country don't like being called bad people because they have different viewpoints than others.

By all means, keep supporting far left ideology.  Keep demonizing long dead people like NBF while, ignoring folks who walked in our day (Byrd).  Keep demonizing our President while ignoring recent Presidents with similar policies, or traits.  I would vote for a Democrat in a heartbeat if, they could convince me their policies, and view point, was better for our country, & would promote more prosperity for all.  None of the current candidates have done so.  More division, & more outrage isn't a winning formula for me, or us.

Oh, you mean the dead guy who had long ago renounced his KKK past and apologized for it.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/blog...byrd-apologized-whats-your-excuse-david-duke/

Of course, like Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms, if he kept the same views after 1964, he wouldn't have been a Democrat anymore.

Meanwhile, the current GOP has a current KKK grand pooh-bah who is a big-time supporter of der Reichsführer in the Oval Office. Which party supports studying the issue of reparations for the oppression African Americans have suffered for over 400 years and which party doesn't even want to discuss it?

Sooo.... Byrd apologized.  Okay.  When was this interview..?

https://youtu.be/PnO6ai0Ktro

Anyone can watch that video.  Look how EASILY the N-word rolls off his tongue.  Pretty telling imo.  That's obviously a word in his normal vocabulary.  He didn't have to think to come up with it.  It was just natural for him.  Also, very telling.  My point..?  Byrd never changed his views.  He changed his political views/actions, to stay in power, & tow the line.

Our current President is a Klan member, & a Nazi supporter..?  Yikes.  That's a big problem in our country today.  Lots of folks make claims/accusations that are simply false.  It's a common problem folks have, when emotions take over logical thought in the arena of political ideology.

It's one thing to dislike someone's ideology, & or political policies.  Quite another to make false accusations.  As I alluded to in my previous post, keep on pointing the racist finger, & by all means, keep making 100% bogus accusations.  You'll help re-elect our President next year.  Many folks will be grateful.  Although, some of your fellow Dems who aren't as radical in their views, will surely be disappointed in you.....

The governor of Tennessee set off a storm when he signed a proclamation for Nathan Bedford Forrest Day. He claimed that the proclamation was required by law.

Set off a storm? How many people actually complained?

I ask, because just this past week we saw a Yahoo news story about Chris Pratt and his "white supremacist" Gadsden flag t-shirt, which supposedly set off a major controversy. Turns out it was about ten people on Twitter who complained, and the news blew it all out of proportion. It wouldn't surprise me if the "storm" in Tennessee wasn't all that much larger, because it doesn't seem to take more than a complaint or two for the news to generate some clickbait controversy.

2001 interview.

So you're saying if Byrd didn't support civil rights legislation in his actions, then he would have been out of power as a Democrat. Thanks for making my point for me. Yes, it's very telling.

So which party is suppressing minority votes?

Der Reichsführer in the Oval Office is the one putting people in concentration camps while lying about his predecessor separating families. Meanwhile, he hasn't repudiated David Duke's support.

https://www.vox.com/2017/8/12/16138358/charlottesville-protests-david-duke-kkk

The KKK officially endorsed him. I missed where he repudiated that support.

I thought you were a stickler for the truth..??? Yikes. That whole line of text is 100% false.

One would have to have had their head in the sand to miss where our President rejected support from the Klan. In fairness, it wasn't reported to the extent that the Klans endorsement was. The media isn't very honest when it comes to reporting on our President either.

To refer to our President as a Nazi, & falsely claim detention centers for illegal aliens are concentration camps, is pretty out there.

I'll take these obviously false statements as evidence that, you don't desire a real, or honest conversation on the subject.

I didn't see him reject any support from the KKK.

They are concentration camps by definition, and der Reichsführer in the Oval Office said Nazis were "very fine people." One would have to have had their head in the sand to miss that one.

"a place where large numbers of people (such as prisoners of war, political prisoners, refugees, or the members of an ethnic or religious minority) are detained or confined under armed guard."

Complete nonsense.

Doesn't take too many clicks of the mouse to find our President's rejection of the KKK.

He never said "Nazi's were very fine people". That is a lie. You are misrepresenting what he said, & ignoring his clarification where he specifically stated he was referring to some of the folks upset about the monument removal.

All of these bogus claims are easily refutable. The text, & video of his comments are available online. After work tomorrow, I will source all of it for you, & prove you are misrepresenting in this post.

It is very disingenuous to call ICE detention centers Concentration Camps. I realize it's a popular liberal talking point but, the whole point of the comment isn't to reference Websters. It's to reference the holocaust, & attempt to draw comparisons to our President as a Nazi which is 100% false.

Honestly, it's hard to take someone serious who uses such blatantly false representations. I have no problem discussing tough issues, or even uncomfortable issues. However, there isn't much dialogue to be had if, honesty, & factual information isn't part of the equation.

Only seems that way to people who don't know what they're talking about.

The concentration camps Cadet Bone Spurs is operating are large centers where refugees are placed under armed guard. That is the very definition of a concentration camp.

Our President's exact words: “Excuse me, they didn’t put themselves down as neo-Nazis, and you had some very bad people in that group. But you also had people that were very fine people on both sides. You had people in that group – excuse me, excuse me, I saw the same pictures you did. You had people in that group that were there to protest the taking down of, to them, a very, very important statue and the renaming of a park from Robert E. Lee to another name.”

“I’m not talking about the neo-Nazis and white nationalists because they should be condemned totally.”

An official statement from the white house:

As I said on Saturday, we condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry, and violence. It has no place in America.

And as I have said many times before: No matter the color of our skin, we all live under the same laws, we all salute the same great flag, and we are all made by the same almighty God. We must love each other, show affection for each other, and unite together in condemnation of hatred, bigotry, and violence. We must rediscover the bonds of love and loyalty that bring us together as Americans.

Racism is evil. And those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans.

We are a nation founded on the truth that all of us are created equal. We are equal in the eyes of our Creator. We are equal under the law. And we are equal under our Constitution. Those who spread violence in the name of bigotry strike at the very core of America.

Did you have these same complaints when President Obama was detaining, & deporting folks..? Were these same facilities concentration camps in your view, under Obama's leadership..?

Der Reichsführer's lies after the fact don't erase his actions. They were very clearly Nazis in Charlottesville, and he said they were "very fine people." If he's going to condemn Nazis, he doesn't call any of them "very fine people."

Sure. But der Reichsführer has taken it to a new low. https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2019/06/trump-child-immigrant-detention-no-toothpaste-obama.html

I was never an Obama supporter. I voted Republican in both elections in which he ran. Obama detained unaccompanied migrants at Fort Sill for about four months. He didn't deliberately separate families, unlike der Reichsführer, and there were no deaths of children under Obama. At least five children have died under der Reichsführer.

That is simply false. You're a smart guy Al. That's obvious. However, you've lost yourself on this particular point. He never said "Nazis were very fine people".

It's cool. Stick to your belief. Just know, belief doesn't make something fact. Something you usually, are very good at.

I'll leave this point be. You've made it clear, you'd rather stick to your opinion, regardless of the facts. No problem.

The facts are there were very clearly Nazis on one side. And he very clearly said there were very fine people on both sides. So yes, he thought the Nazis had some very fine people.

2016 was the first time I ever voted for a single Democrat for any office. The Republican Party to which I used to proudly belong has decayed into something unrecognizable. Republicans used to be the first ones to oppose Russian interference in anything. Now they are part of Russian interference. Republicans used to be real patriots. Now they are phony patriots. John McCain was the last real Republican.

You don't believe the DNC, & Clinton campaign had ANYTHING to do with that fiasco..?
