they are called like that. missile carriers are not line of sight weapon systems (they can do that of course). the idea is that some infantry way forward 'paints' the tasrget and whoosh.More like Infantry Support Vehicles. For example the Bradley with anti tank missiles worked out well against Iraqi armor supplied by the former Soviet Union?

choppers really like someone on the ground to 'paint' the target. or at least another chopper doing that because for a line of sight attack they need o stay stationary. what do you think a tank gun does to a chopper with any of the munitions in the tank?yes also infantry fighting vehicles like the Bradley.
Not to forget anti-tank missile-carrying helicopters.
True that the anti tank missiles that are now close to fifty years old made the TDs obsolete.they are called like that. missile carriers are not line of sight weapon systems (they can do thar of course). the idea is that some infantry way forward 'paints' the tasrget and whoosh.
Originally US Army choppers used TOW missiles in Vietnam during the 1972 North Vietnamese invasion. They were wire guided missiles. Has long as the chopper could stay out of range of a Soviet Dhaska 12.7mm gun the choppers were fine. If the North Vietnamese towed 23mm anti aircraft guns that's a different story.choppers really like someone on the ground to 'paint' the target. or at least another chopper doing that becausefor a line of sight attack they need o stay stationary. what do you think a tank gun does to a chopper with any of he munitions in the tank?
1972 being the word here - don't know about you, but i was 8 years old most of that yearOriginally US Army choppers used TOW missiles in Vietnam during the 1972 North Vietnamese invasion. I can remember going to Red Stone Arsenal Huntsville Al on grade school trip and seeing the hot new technology 1st Gen TOW missile demonstrated.1972 being the word here - don't know about you, but i was 8 years old most of that year
I remember little other than the tow missile, looking at the wire, a radar demonstration and not much more.

That is relevant to the thread exactly how?1972 being the word here - don't know about you, but i was 8 years old most of that year
Not sure if Werner Von Braun had anything to do with the TOW missile..about a certain obersturmbannführer von braun
Which has what to do with the TOW? I already mentioned that TOW stands for Tube Optical Wire. The clip above deales with an air to ship radio controlled missile which was very advanced for it's era.

No kidding but this is a history forum.that it was a long time ago
I have never heard of a tank shooting down a helicopter. Do you have any examples excluding using a SAM?choppers really like someone on the ground to 'paint' the target. or at least another chopper doing that because for a line of sight attack they need o stay stationary. what do you think a tank gun does to a chopper with any of the munitions in the tank?
