Israel's new government planning to take over the judiciary once they take office along with other right-wing policies...

Israel’s centrist and left-wing camps, locked out of power for much of the last several years, have frequently welcomed the court’s interventions, viewing the bench as a critical check on attempts by right-wing and religious parties to steamroll their legislative agendas through the legislature.

On October 18, Religious Zionism party leader Bezalel Smotrich tossed a grenade into the simmering debate over the role of the court, demanding both a High Court override clause and judicial selection reform as non-negotiable conditions for his party to enter a government.

Yes , it seems many democratic nations are heading into their banana republic phase like Rome did centuries before us... I think because of aging populations... America , British , Israel have aging population and declining working age populations... Age Block voting...

The United States may have to come to terms with a new Israel... I doubt it... @Leftyhunter , @Tom

“The inclusion of far-right Jewish supremacists in Israel’s governing coalition will add to the ongoing narrative shift that is making it increasingly difficult for folks to continue to make excuses for Israel’s war crimes and human rights violations,” said Tariq Kenney-Shawa, US policy fellow at Al-Shabaka, a Palestinian think-tank.

“It’s a repeat of the same saga that we’ve seen before,” said Yousef Munayyer, a senior fellow at the Arab Center Washington DC. “Every few elections, there is a new figure on this team that makes their political career by being as openly fascist and as openly racist towards Palestinians.”

The Far Right in Israel is fueled by Israeli youth...

Jewish supremacy appears to have scored a major victory in Tuesday’s Israeli elections.

First round exit polls show the Religious Zionism bloc garnering 14 or 15 mandates in the country’s 120-seat parliament, which would make it the third largest party in the Knesset. Regardless of whether Benjamin Netanyahu claws his way back to power (which appears to be a real possibility) or Israel heads toward another election in spring 2023, the hard-right looms as a permanent fixture on Israel’s political landscape.

Just hours before the polls closed, Jerusalem youth proudly bore the message of “To be a Jew in our land” and “It’s time for Ben-Gvir”, as they marched through the city’s Mahane Yehudah market. For younger voters, Itamar Ben-Gvir’s authenticity matters.

The turn to the ultra right in Israel has begun...

The president of the Palestinian Authority (PA), Mahmoud Abbas, said on Saturday that the new Israeli government’s motto was “extremism and apartheid”.

Here we go Israel has a long reach and memory... cost a man a position for saying the truth...

That seems to be what happened to me at Harvard’s Kennedy School. If any academic institution can afford to abide by principle, to refuse to compromise academic freedom under real or presumed donor pressure, it is Harvard, the world’s richest university. Yet the Kennedy School’s dean, Douglas Elmendorf, vetoed a human rights fellowship that had been offered to me because of my criticism of Israel. As best we can tell, donor reaction was his concern.

Israel is an ethnocracy...

An ethnocracy is a type of political structure in which the state apparatus is controlled by a dominant ethnic group (or groups) to further its interests, power and resources. Ethnocratic regimes typically display a 'thin' democratic façade covering a more profound ethnic structure, in which ethnicity (race, religion, language etc) – and not citizenship – is the key to securing power and resources.[1] An ethnocratic society facilitates the ethnicization of the state by the dominant group, through the expansion of control likely accompanied by conflict with minorities or neighbouring states. A theory of ethnocratic regimes was developed by critical geographer Oren Yiftachel during the 1990s and later developed by a range of international scholars.

Here an article...

The state of Israel has been internationally recognized as a democracy since its independence from British Mandate, in 1948. However, when taking into account the continued oppression of Arab minority groups, such as the Palestinians, it is debatable whether Israel was ever a democracy at all.

According to the Economist Intelligence Unit’s (EIU) Democracy Index, Freedom House’s Freedom in the World, Polity’s IV Project dataset, and the World Bank’s Worldwide Governance Indicator (WGI) Israel’s democracy is not eroding; but it is flawed. Since 1948, Israel—the government and the citizens—has formally and informally, legally and illegally, discriminated against Palestinians inside and outside of Israel.

Israel has also seen strained relations between Zionists, whose prioritize ethnocracy over democracy, and liberals, who prioritize democracy over ethnocracy. This is particularly concerning because of the historical and contemporary pervasiveness of Zionism in Israel and Zionism’s incompatibility with liberal democracy. The tensions between Zionists and liberals is quantified by low public support for democratic values, revealed in the IDI’s 2010 report on “Democratic Values in Practice.” The Guttman Center team reported that only 20% of respondents think that being a democratic state is more important than being a Jewish one— 43% think they are equally important and 31% think being Jewish is more important. Additionally, 46% think “there should be legal penalties for persons who speak out against Zionism” and 50% think non-Zionist parties should be allowed to participate in elections. Furthermore, “86% believe that critical decisions for the state should be taken by a Jewish majority” and 62% believe that “as long as Israel is in a state of conflict with the Palestinians, the views of Arab citizens of Israel on foreign affairs and security issues should not be taken into account.” Finally, 49% do not “support full equality of rights between Jews and Arabs.”

Here is a video showing Israel's economic turnaround from the 1980s and Shimon Perez one of Israel's founding fathers got it going... They created a partnership with Venture Capitalists that has created great wealth... A positive story about Israel.

It seems Israel going to have thugs on the street... like in 1920s Germany...

What a mess but this sound familiar with your nation's 1920/1930 history... Isreal in the next decade will become a full authoritarian state, with voting rights for a few.

The 73-year-old leader only managed to pacify the national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, the most ardent supporter of the judicial reform bill from the far-right Jewish Power party, by agreeing to the formation of a “national guard” under Ben-Gvir’s control.

While there were questions over whether Netanyahu had made an empty promise – he did not mention it in his major Monday speech and it would require several more steps to become established – critics decried plans for what they described as a militia.

Do not be a Christian in Jersulium...

Upstairs in his monastery tucked in the Old City, Brother Matteo Munari heard a commotion at the Church of the Flagellation, along the path where Jesus is said to have carried his cross on the way to his crucifixion. Munari, 49, went downstairs and found that a 10-foot statue of Jesus had been wrested off its pedestal and thrown to the ground, its face partially destroyed. When the church’s doorman tackled the man suspected of toppling the statue on Feb. 2, Jewish ritual tassels that had been concealed under his clothes emerged, the Franciscan friar said.

Jerusalem – Nothing about the attack or what happened since surprised Miran Krikorian. The Armenian owner of Taboon and Wine Bar in the Old City of Jerusalem was not surprised to receive a call the night of January 26 that a mob of Israeli settlers was attacking his bar in the Christian Quarter and shouting “Death to Arabs … Death to Christians.”

I am amazed the Palestinians were able to keep this assault from Israeli spooks... What about the barriers that surround Gaza... I know they use those parasails but I just question it all.... In the end, Palestinians ran around with guns, taking hostages, and other horrible killings. It Is going to be a windfall for the right wing in Israel... Now the right wing has carte blanche to kill as many Palestinians as desired... If you notice about every 20 years we have a Palestinian intifada that ends badly for the Palestinians and another generation is cowed until another generation of young Palestinians come along thinking violence is the answer. It is becoming a cycle... No one going to blame Israelis' treatment of the Palestinians as the cause but blame the battered wife for raising her fist...

Palestinians are already on the back foot and Israel kill them in the numbers the Israelis were killed in. You the cut off water, power, and food from the Gaza, if Russia had done something like that we would be yelling war crimes... I understand Israel needs to bring Hamas to account but how big is the blank check on how many Palestinians be killed before the West is embarrassed... Link works...

Israelis use White Phosphorus in the past and now...

This report documents Israel's extensive use of white phosphorus munitions during its 22-day military operations in Gaza, from December 27, 2008 to January 18, 2009, named Operation Cast Lead. Based on in-depth investigations in Gaza, the report concludes that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) repeatedly exploded white phosphorus munitions in the air over populated areas, killing and injuring civilians, and damaging civilian structures, including a school, a market, a humanitarian aid warehouse and a hospital. White phosphorus munitions did not kill the most civilians in Gaza – many more died from missiles, bombs, heavy artillery, tank shells, and small arms fire – but their use in densely populated neighborhoods, including downtown Gaza City, violated international humanitarian law (the laws of war), which requires taking all feasible precautions to avoid civilian harm and prohibits indiscriminate attacks.
